The title of my review may be a little misleading. I recently had the opportunity to demo Dead Space 3 and to be perfectly honest, I will not be purchasing or playing this game ever again. In fact, the only reason I even touched the demo was to be able to give my impression. My reasoning behind my decision is not what you think however. Dead Space 3 is graphically amazing, the tone dead-on as far as pacing and atmosphere, and the controls are what you would expect for the genre, minus the ability to stomp which is rewarding when dealing with enemies, seems out of place for opening boxes to reveal items within. I want to like this series and even love it, but honestly it’s too damn scary for me! I tried the original Dead Space and had to stop playing after 10 minutes, skipped Dead Space 2, and was hoping my older heart could take Dead Space 3 and unfortunately, it can not. So there you have it, the ONLY reason not to play and enjoy this game is if you fear heart attack and don’t want the uneasy feeling of walking around your home at night seeing things that aren’t there. For the record, I am a horror movie fan, so it’s not genre that gives me the creeps, it’s the immersion and knowing that instead of watching someone peek around the corner, you’re the one actually doing it. So if you love these type of games and yes I avoided Bioshock for the same reasons, you’ll find plenty here to love. Lots of gore, plenty of “jump” scenes, horror movie inspired music, and action that had it not been for the horror aesthetics would have this gamer completely on board. I repeat this is a great game, don’t let my cowardice impact your decision. Go see for yourself! Or not if you like peace of mind.
