Frank (Seth Rogen) with Brenda (Kristen Wiig) in Columbia Pictures' SAUSAGE PARTY.

A few days ago King Phayce, Big Baba Rob and I had the unique pleasure of sitting down and chatting with Conrad Vernon and Greg Tiernan, the Co-Directors for the upcoming movie Sausage Party. Sausage Party is brought to you by the same team that brought us movies like Super Bad and The Neighbors, and stars comedic favorites like Seth Rogen, Kristin Wiig, Jonah Hill, Bill Hader, Michael Cera, James Franco, Danny McBride, Craig Robinson, Salma Hayek, and Paul Rudd, just to mention a few.

Greg Tiernan and Conrad Vernon are veterans in the field of animation. They met on the set of Cool World in the early 1990s and have been long time friends and collaborators since. Greg has worked on such iconic projects as All Dogs Go to Heaven, An American Tail, and The Land Before Time, not to mention a host of television shows and video games like Danger Mouse, Rugrats, Gargoyles, The Lion King, Hercules, The Tigger Movie, Thomas and Friends, and God of War. Similarly, Conrad has had an equally illustrious career in animation, having served as a voice actor, director and/or animator on such noted projects as the Madagascar franchise, Monsters vs. Aliens, Shrek 2, Shark Tale, Dexter’s Laboratory, and Kung Fu Panda 2, just to mention a few.

Columbia Pictures’ “Sausage Party.”

Being long time fans of animation, this interview was a real tweet for the team. King Phayce even had a real fanboy moment as he had a chance to chat with Greg Tiernan about the one episode of Danger Mouse he worked on. For those of you who’ve been living under a rock, Phayce is a huge Danger Mouse Fan. The big question on everybody’s mind was why Sausage Party, to which we got a fairly simple answer, “this is animation for adults.” Greg and Conrad both agreed that their are a lot of adults that are huge animation fans, but lack any movies they can go to without the kids. Although everyone agreed that Disney, Pixar and Dreamworks are doing a great job at carrying the animation banner, there also needs to be something for the adult animation fan. With that, enter Seth Rogen and the crew. Greg noted that Seth and the team originally approached him about creating an animated feature about “Sausages escaping to go fuck buns.” T0 which Greg said tell me more. Several initial conversations, and a grand total of seven years later, these guys have created a film that explores the meaning of life, death and the afterlife from a very unique perspective. Sausage Party is part raunchy comedy, part action movie, and part Nietzsche, for the potty mouthed college stoner trapped inside us all. If you don’t believe me, check out this red band trailer:

Needless to say, the trailer alone made me want to see the move! Interacting with Greg and Conrad only increased the excitement. When asked if the success of Deadpool gave Sausage Party a shot in the arm, Greg and Conrad both replied in the affirmative noting that Deadpool proved the viability of an R rated comic book movie with high levels of violence and adult themes. They noted that as the first R rated CGI animated film ever, it’s nice to be in a space where there are other R rated creative projects.

At the Black Geeks we are super excited to see Sausage Party. The idea of an animation project specifically created for adults, is an idea that is way overdue. Sausage Party has an outstanding voice cast, and two directors who are both passionate about animation, as well as putting forward a product that adult fans will love. It was a true pleasure hanging out with Greg and Conrad. We wish them all of the success in the world and look forward to Sausage Party breaking a few box office records this summer!
