Ben 10 Omniverse

Am I the only one just a little taken a back by this? When Ben 10 Ultimate Alien ended its season, it went out with a bang! Ben became omnipotent then gave it up, Vilgax was destroyed after achieving ultimate power, we learned the true secret and purpose of the Forever Knights, and we also learned a lot more about the Plumbers. Awesome writing, nice animation and really strong storytelling. Needless to say, I was impressed. Especially after having watched the show from the beginning and bore witness to its evolution into really good animation. I say animation because it had moved beyond cartoon.

Fast forward to the next season and we get Ben 10 Omniverse. Gwen and Kevin are no longer in the picture, Ben gets an alien partner, the animation has regressed back to cartoonish, and the deeper stories have now been replaced with cartoon like silliness and antics. All of which begs the question, what the hell happened? Cartoons are suppose to evolve and get deeper as they move along, drawing you further into the world that’s been created. We’ve watched been grow from a brat into a young hero and enjoyed the ride. Now we’ve watched him get dumb down, while the story itself has been force fed a healthy helping of water. I don’t get it. This was shaping up to be one of those epic, well maybe not epic, but at least one of those really good cartoons we all talk about. It had the potential to become a classic, but this new direction is kinda derailing that. I get that they’re probably making it less serious for younger viewers and that there is tremendous money to be made from licensing, video games, toys, etc…, but what about the older viewers who you’ve already hooked? What about us? I can’t speak for you, but as for me, I’ll probably stop watching. I’ve kinda come to far to start going back now.

  1. The change of direction is most likely to milk the franchise licenses for all they are worth. This would be mitigated somewhat if the quality in animation and plot were maintained. Also, a part of me can’t help but think with the late, great Dwayne McDuffie no longer involved, the quality was bound to suffer. He was a creative genius. He helped bring a magical touch to Ben 10 as well as the Justice League animated series, and the various DC animated films he was involved in.
